Biography

Jürgen Schwalk was born in 1964 in Unna. He studied the classical guitar at the Folkwankhochschule Essen with Prof. Hans Gräf and finished his studies in 1990 with the “artist maturity”. At the same time he started his composition studies with Prof. Zillhardt. Throughout this period he already toured Europe, e.g. Italy, Belgium, France and Hungary.

Following his studies at the Folkwang University, he attended several master classes with Prof. Oscar Ghiglia, Hubert Käppel, Costas Cotsiolis, Merengue de Cordoba (Flamenco) others. At the same time he joined several jazz rock bands.

In addition to his musical education he also studied sociology at the University of Essen from 1992-1994.

It is of major importance to Jürgen Schwalk to work on music of composers who had to go into exile during the German Nazi-era. Thus he founded, together with the flautist Thomas Döller”, the “Duo Alexandre Tansman” in memory of the great Jewish composer, who had go into exile because of the Nazi regime. The Duo played on several international Festivals (“V International Spring Festival Ankara”, “Luglio Pistoise”, Italien, Marc Chagall Ausstellungseröffnung “Träume und Dramen”.Schloss Gottorf / Schleswig)

In 2002 the new CD has been published. The main piece is Tansmans “Le tour de monde en miniature” It´s the first complete recording in this formation!

In March 1995 Jürgen Schwalk was invited to play as soloist at the “II International Guitar Festival in Acapulco”. He also followed an invitation to play as soloist on the “5th International Guitar Festival Morelia /Mexico” . These Festival were followed by a concert tour throughout 8 different provinces and towns of Mexico. Since this time he plays every year a tour in Mexico.

In 1994 he published his CD “Hommage a Tansman”. The CD was in the music magazin “Cut” the CD of the mounth.

1996 he released “Paesaggio con figura” with own works for solo guitar.

The “Duo Alexandre Tansman” published in this year the CD “ Impression Transatlantique” with works by Tansman, Schlosberg, Ravel and other.

He won two national prizes for his compostions. In spring 2002 his concert for guitar and chamber orchester was performed by the canadien guitarist Remi Boucher in Mexico.His new CD was published in January 2002.

Jürgen Schwalk is also a producer of guitar music. He produce for example the mexican guitarist Raul Olmos.

Jürgen Schwalk published his 6th CD “Peregrination”in August 2004

He presented his new CD October 2004 in New York City

In 2007 he recorded in Habana / Cuba the guitarpart for the international big band “IRAZU”.
